AI domain ranking: see where you stand in answer engines

Buyers now ask an assistant before they open a search engine. AI domain ranking measures whether your domain is named in those answers, in what position, and which competitors get cited in your place — then scores it next to your classic Google performance.

Why AI domain ranking is not the same as SEO ranking

A classic rank tracker asks where a URL sits in a list of ten blue links. An answer engine returns one synthesised response, and the only question that matters is whether your domain is inside it. A page can rank fourth in Google and never be cited by an assistant, or be cited constantly while ranking nowhere.

The inputs differ too. Answer engines lean on clear, extractable, well-sourced content and on how consistently a brand is described across the web. Link authority still helps, but topical clarity and citation-worthiness carry far more weight than they do in a traditional SERP.

How CompeteRank scores it

Enter a domain and CompeteRank generates the prompts a real buyer would ask in that category — or you supply up to six of your own. Each prompt is scored per engine for mention likelihood, answer position and sentiment, then aggregated into an AI visibility score you can track over time.

The same run returns the competitors being cited instead of you and prioritised recommendations for closing the gap, so the output is a backlog rather than a dashboard.

What moves an AI ranking

Answer engines reward sources that are easy to quote: direct answers near the top of the page, specific numbers, clear definitions, and consistent naming of your product and category. Pages built as long narrative essays get summarised without attribution far more often than pages built as structured answers.

Consistency off-site matters as much as on-site work. When your category description, pricing model and differentiators are described the same way everywhere an assistant can read, the model has a stable answer to give.

Frequently asked questions

What is AI domain ranking?
AI domain ranking measures how often and how prominently a domain is named or cited inside AI assistant answers — Perplexity, ChatGPT, Copilot and Google AI Overviews — rather than its position in a classic list of search results.
How do I check my domain's AI ranking for free?
Enter your domain in CompeteRank's AI Rank Tracker. It scores mention likelihood, answer position and citation competitors across four answer engines with no signup required.
Can I rank in AI search without ranking in Google?
Yes. Answer engines draw on a wider and differently-weighted set of sources, so sites cited frequently by assistants sometimes rank modestly in Google, and high-ranking pages are sometimes never cited.
How often should I track AI rankings?
Monthly is enough for most sites, weekly if you are actively running a campaign. Answers shift as models are updated and as competitors publish, so a single snapshot ages quickly.
