How to Estimate Website Traffic for Any Domain

Updated 28 August 2026 · 6 min read

You cannot see another site's analytics, so every external traffic figure is a model. Understanding how those models are built tells you when to trust them, when to halve them, and which parts of the number are useful for a competitive decision.

How traffic estimates are built

The dominant method is keyword-based: take every keyword a domain ranks for, multiply each keyword's search volume by the expected click-through rate for its position, and sum the result. It captures Google organic search and nothing else.

That means direct visits, email, paid ads, social referrals, app traffic and newsletter clicks are all invisible. For a brand-led business, real traffic is frequently several times the estimate. For an SEO-led affiliate site, the estimate can be close.

What the estimates systematically miss

Three blind spots matter most in 2026. Zero-click results and AI Overviews absorb clicks that models still credit to the ranking page. Logged-in and app-first products get most of their sessions without a search. And answer engines such as Perplexity and ChatGPT now send referral traffic that classic keyword models do not attempt to price.

  • Zero-click SERPs and AI Overviews inflate expected clicks
  • Brand-heavy and app-first products are consistently underestimated
  • Answer-engine referrals are mostly uncounted
  • Very new or very small sites fall below the crawl threshold entirely

Sanity-checking a number before you act on it

Compare, do not absolutize. If competitor A estimates at 40,000 visits and competitor B at 8,000, the ratio is far more reliable than either figure. Then look at the composition: how many keywords drive the total, and how concentrated the traffic is in the top few pages. A site whose estimate rests on two keywords is one algorithm update away from losing it.

Finally, check trend direction over several months. A rising estimate on a flat keyword count usually means positions improved; a rising estimate on rising keyword count means the content programme is working.

Turning an estimate into a decision

Traffic estimates are for prioritisation, not reporting. Use them to decide which competitor to study, which content gap to fill, and whether a market has enough demand to justify the work. Use your own analytics for anything you report as fact.

CompeteRank pairs the traffic estimate with conversion-rate and revenue-potential estimates so the number connects to a business outcome rather than sitting alone on a dashboard.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate are website traffic estimates?
They are directional. For SEO-led sites the estimate is often within the right order of magnitude; for brand-led or app-first sites it can understate real traffic several times over, because only Google organic search is modelled.
Can I see another website's exact traffic?
No. Only the site owner's analytics show exact sessions. Every external figure — including CompeteRank's — is an estimate built from ranking and volume data.
Why does traffic drop without a ranking change?
Usually because the SERP changed around you. An AI Overview, a featured snippet or a new ad block above the results can cut clicks sharply while your position stays identical.
How do I estimate traffic for a brand new domain?
Keyword models return near zero because there is nothing indexed yet. Estimate from the category instead: look at the traffic of comparable sites and the search volume of the terms you plan to target.
